Cosmic consciousness

The Lost Symbol

Cosmic consciousness is the idea that human minds can coalesce into a shared awareness whose influence reaches beyond individual bodies and into the physical world. In the account of Noetic Science, it offers a spiritual interpretation of experimental findings: collective intention may do more than accompany events; it may help alter matter and bring order to systems that would otherwise behave randomly.

The September 11 Anomaly

In the hours after September 11, 2001, four scientists observed a striking change in the outputs of thirty-seven Random Event Generators around the world. Their outputs became significantly less random as people across the globe focused together on the tragedy in shared grief. The proposed connection was not that the machines registered people’s feelings in any ordinary sense, but that the convergence of millions of minds had affected their randomizing function.

The episode gives the concept its concrete foothold in the novel: an intimate human response, grief, appears at a global scale as a possible influence on physical systems. The shift from randomness toward order is presented as paralleling the ancient spiritual belief in cosmic consciousness, a vast coalescing of human intention capable of interacting with matter.

Research and Interpretation

Later studies of mass meditation and prayer reportedly produced similar results in Random Event Generators, extending the pattern beyond the immediate aftermath of a single catastrophe. These findings fuel the claim that consciousness may be a substance beyond the body, rather than a process confined within an individual. Lynne McTaggart describes it as highly ordered energy capable of changing the physical world; her book The Intention Experiment helped inspire Katherine Solomon’s global, Web-based study of how human intention might affect the world.

Cosmic consciousness therefore links the measurable and the mystical without making them identical. The generators supply an experimental sign of changing outputs; the shared grief and collective intention supply the human context; and cosmic consciousness names the larger possibility inferred from their conjunction. Within the account of Noetic Science, the idea recasts collective awareness as a potential causal force in the material world.
